BioNeji is the genius of the ancient and respected Hyuuga Clan, which posses the Byakugan bloodline ability. This ability allows for near 360 degree vision as well as the ability to see through any object or view a person’s chakra system when used with chakra. This ability has allowed for the Hyuuga to become one of the most powerful (if not THE most powerful) clans in Konohakagure, the Village Hidden in the Leaves, and with this power, came a lot of arrogance.
Since the beginning, the Hyuuga have been separated into two different houses, The Main House and the Branch House. The Main House rules over the Branch House and The Branch House members are pretty much treated like servants. Also, when the heir of the Main House turns three, all children in the Branch House are branded with a curse seal on their foreheads which, when activated by a member of the Main House, will kill the wearer and seal away their bloodline so that enemies of the Hyuuga won’t be able to get their hands on the Byakugan’s secrets.
Neji’s father Hizashi was the twin brother of the Main House clan leader, but because he was born second, he became a member of the Branch House. When Neji was about four, Ninja from Hidden Cloud village came to Hidden Leaf on the pretense of discussing a peace treaty with the Leaf attempted to kidnap Hinata, the then three year old heir to the Hyuuga main house. They were stopped and killed by her father Hiashi, but Hidden Cloud threatened to go to war with the Leaf if they didn’t get Hiashi’s dead body as payment. They got Hizashi’s body instead, his bloodline sealed by his curse seal.
Because of this Neji grew up with a major chip on his shoulder. He became bitter and hateful, with am unhealthy belief in fate and people’s lifes being unchangeably predetermined. That only started to change during the Chuunin exam when Naruto beat him in a match. Naruto helped Neji start to realize that fate could in fact be changed. Then Neji learned the truth about his father: Hizashi had chosen to sacrifice himself in his brother’s place, not for the sake of the clan, but for Hiashi’s sake.
Thanks to all this, Neji began to gain a new perspective on life, which lead him to be a somewhat nicer person, though he did still believe in fate. Over the next three years while Naruto was away on his training journey, Neji went on to patch things up between himself and his uncle and cousin. He was the first person among Naruto’s friends to reach the level of Jounin.
